CHAPTER 2
श्रीभगवानुवाच
प्रजहाति यदा कामान्सर्वान्पार्थ मनोगतान् ।
आत्मन्येवात्मना तुष्टः स्थितप्रज्ञस्तदोच्यते ॥५५॥
śrī-bhagavān uvāca
prajahāti yadā kāmān, sarvān pārtha mano-gatān
ātmany evātmanā tuṣṭaḥ, sthita-prajñas tadocyate
The Blessed Lord said:
O Pārtha (Arjuna), when an aspirant abandons all desires arising in the mind and is fully satisfied in the self by his own self, then he is said to be the man of steady wisdom (steady intellect). 55
Comment – The steadiness of the intellect is considered superior than the steadiness of the mind; because with the steadiness of mind, one attains some occult powers, but with the steadiness of intellect, he can elevate himself spiritually. The steadiness of mind prevents the natural tendencies and habits of life, whereas with steadiness of intellect, is firmly resolving on the ultimate goal of life.
We can only give up that which essentially has already been relinquished from time immemorial. The desire does not reside in the self but arises in the mind. But due to affinity and feeling of oneness with the mind (assumed identification of mind with self), the desires appear to be in the self. When the spiritual seeker experiences the absence of all desires in the self then his intellect automatically becomes stable.
दुःखेष्वनुद्विग्नमनाः सुखेषु विगतस्पृहः ।
वीतरागभयक्रोधः स्थितधीर्मुनिरुच्यते ॥५६॥
duḥkheṣv anudvigna-manāḥ, sukheṣu vigata-spṛhaḥ
Vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodhaḥ, sthita-dhīr munir ucyate
He whose mind remains unperturbed in sorrow, who does not crave for pleasure and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady wisdom. 56
