GITA ON EQUANIMITY – PART 5 (EVENNESS OF MIND)

CHAPTER 2 (cont’d)

यः सर्वत्रानभिस्नेहस्तत्तत्प्राप्य शुभाशुभम् ।
नाभिनन्दति द्वेष्टि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता ॥५७॥

yaḥ sarvatrānabhisnehas, tat tat prāpya śubhāśubham
nābhinandati na dveṣṭi, tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā

He who is unattached from everywhere (under all conditions), who is not delighted on receiving pleasant and nor dejected by unpleasant, his wisdom is stable.    57

यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः ।
इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता ॥५८॥

yadā saṁharate cāyaṁ, kūrmo ’ṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ
Indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas, tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā

As a tortoise, withdraws its limbs from all sides (into its shell), in the same way, when he (Karmayogī) detaches completely his senses from the sense-objects, his intellect is stable.  58

Comment – Self always and continuously stays the same (As Is) and the body constantly and perpetually changes; therefore, there is no change in the nature or the essence of either of these. But when the Self identifies with the body (assumes relation with body as ‘me’ and ‘mine’), then there is an effect of impressions of the body and the world on the intellect. When the identification with `me’ and `mine’ are gone then the effect of body and the world on intellect is gone and the intellect becomes steady. With the steadiness in intellect then the Self gets situated in Its own natural state.
