GITA ON EQUANIMITY–PART 8 (EVENNESS OF MIND)

रागद्वेषवियुक्तैस्तु विषयानिन्द्रियैश्चरन् ।
आत्मवश्यैर्विधेयात्मा प्रसादमधिगच्छति ॥६४॥

प्रसादे सर्वदुःखानां हानिरस्योपजायते ।
प्रसन्नचेतसो ह्याशु बुद्धिः पर्यवतिष्ठते ॥६५॥

rāga-dveṣa-vimuktais tu, viṣayān indriyaiś caran
ātma-vaśyair vidheyātmā, prasādam adhigacchati

prasāde sarva-duḥkhānāṁ, hānir asyopajāyate
prasanna-cetaso hy āśu, buddhiḥ paryavatiṣṭhate

But a self-controlled yogi (Karmayoga aspirant), freed from attraction and aversion (Rāga-Dveṣau), with his senses under control though moving about amongst the objects of senses, he attains tranquility (purity) of mind. With the attainment of such tranquility, all his sorrows come to an end; and undoubtedly the intellect of such an aspirant, very soon becomes firmly established in God.   64-65

Comment – If there is no attraction and attachment to the objects of the senses, even enjoying the pleasures sanctioned by the scriptures, there is no fall for him, but instead he advances in the spiritual path.

नास्ति बुद्धिरयुक्तस्य चायुक्तस्य भावना ।
चाभावयतः शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुतः सुखम् ॥६६॥

nāsti buddhir ayuktasya, na cāyuktasya bhāvanā
na cābhāvayataḥ śāntir, aśāntasya kutaḥ sukham

He, who has not controlled his mind and senses, cannot have a determinate intellect. And without a determinate intellect, such an undisciplined man cannot have a selfless feeling (bhāva) or the sense of duty. A man without the sentiments of selflessness cannot have peace; then how can there be happiness in one, who is lacking peace?   66

Comment – For Karmayoga, Niṣkāma Bhāva (feeling of unselfish motive) is the prime requirement. To attain to Niṣkāma Bhāva, it is essential to control the mind and senses, and have a determinate intellect.
