When one is hungry, one gets pleasure from eating – this is an indisputable fact. Pay attention ! The pleasure that one gets from the first morsel, does one get the same pleasure after eating five-ten morsels ? As we continue to eat, the pleasure of eating diminishes. Finally, the hunger comes to an end, and one feels satisfied. There after does the meal give one pleasure? After the hunger is satiated, take the next morsel and see if it gives you pleasure. The beginning of pleasure was from interest in eating. Therefore, worldly pleasures will give you pleasure as long as you are displeased without them. If you are not displeased, without the thing, it can never make you happy. In conclusion, this world gives pleasure and happiness to those who are unhappy. And after giving pleasure, it binds them. It is only a misconception that we get pleasure due to a particular thing.
Now understand that how do you get happiness from disinclination or disinterest for a thing. Are you able to renounce a sense pleasure without having disinterest in it ? When there is disinterest, then only renunciation takes place. So as long as disinterest, disinclination does not take place, till then one does not become happy, and till there is interest, inclination, in a thing, there is pleasure in it. I have told you this before that there is happiness in disinterest (disinclination) and disinterest takes place on having pleasure – The analysis on this is a bit difficult, but both are true. As one continues to enjoy sense pleasures, disinterest surely develops in it. Now pay close attention ! Disinterest means severing relationship. Enjoyment of pleasure leads to severing relationship, which leads to happiness. What is severing relationship? – This is essential to understand. Severance means destroying the power (strength) to enjoy pleasures. Now one is unable to further enjoy pleasures. Then by the destruction of the power (strength) to enjoy, both disinterest (disinclination) and happiness take place. If the power (strength) was not destroyed, then how would there be disinterest (disinclination)? It means that the happiness is not from the enjoyment of pleasures, but from destroying the power (strength), in other words, from fatigue.
After running for a long time, when one sits down then one experiences happiness. This happiness if from fatigue. Therefore happiness would be the name of destruction of the power (strength) to enjoy sense pleasures. Whether you call is destruction or disinterest. A man of pleasures, destroys the object of pleasure, and also destroys himself. A renunciate (detached) man, does not do any such thing. By believing that happiness to be in sense pleasures, a man cannot renounce sense pleasures, hence he is unable to hold firm the disinterest that comes at the end of pleasures that are enjoyed, nor is he able to hold steady on to the happiness that comes from renunciation. If he understands that there is happiness in the severing relationship with enjoyment of pleasures, then he will not be stuck (bound) by sense pleasures.
