What to Do and What Not to Do
(Code of Conduct)
Foreword
Hindu culture is very unique. All its principles are completely scientific and will lead to the worldly and spiritual progress of mankind. How to bring about the welfare of human beings easily and quickly – the serious thought that has been given in Hindu culture is not available anywhere else. From birth till death, all the things and persons with which man comes in contact and all the activities he performs, have been scientifically planned, with defined boundaries and cultured by our revolutionary sages and sages and have culminated in the attainment of supreme glory. That is why God has said in very clear words in Geeta –
(Gita 16/23-24)
‘The person who abandons the scriptures and behaves as per his wish, neither attains Siddhi (perfection), nor happiness (peace) nor the ultimate path. Therefore, for you, the scriptures are the only proof in the system of duties and non-duties – knowing this, you are worthy of performing the duties as per the scriptures in this world, that is, you should perform the duties as per the scriptures.
It means that we know ‘what to do, what not to do?’ – In this system only scriptures should be considered as evidence. Those who behave as per the scriptures are ‘men’ and those who behave as per their wish (arbitrary) are ‘vanars’ (human-like monkeys) –
Matayo yatra gachchanti tatra gachchanti vanarah,
Shastraani Yatra Gachchanti Tatra Gachchanti Te Naraah.
In Gita, God has called the humans who behave arbitrarily as ‘Asuras’ (demonaic)-
Pravrittiṃ ca nivṛtim ca jana na vidurasuraḥ. (Gita 16.7)
In the present times, disorder has increased a lot in the society due to lack of proper education, company, environment etc. What should be done and what should not be done according to the scriptures – the people of the new generation neither know nor want to know this. If those who know classical conduct and behavior try to tell them, they do not listen to them and make fun of them. Due to people’s negligence, many of our religious scriptures are disappearing. The number of people who read the scriptures that are available is very few. There is neither interest nor time to read. The noble men who know the scriptures, explain them and act accordingly have become rare. In such a situation, it was considered necessary to publish a book through which the people seeking answers can get information about the important things related to conduct and behavior mentioned in the scriptures. This effort has been made in this direction.
The scriptures are like a bottomless ocean. The present book has been written after reviewing the available scriptures according to my limited knowledge, understanding, ability and time. An attempt has been made to bring to light those things about which people have very little knowledge. Although some things may seem impractical to the readers in the present times, they will definitely know what the scriptures say on a particular subject.
The creation of this book has been inspired by our most revered Swamiji Shri Ramsukhdasji Maharaj and this work has been accomplished due to his grace. The readers are requested to study this book and try to implement the things mentioned in it in their lives.
